WhatsApp has traditionally offered fewer updates for its web version compared to the mobile app, leaving desktop users with only the basic “Light” and “Dark” modes. However, according to a recent report from WABetaInfo, Meta is now working on a significant visual update that will bring much-needed customization to the web client.
The company is currently testing a library of 49 different chat themes. This change aims to provide a more personalized experience for those who use WhatsApp on their computers for work or daily communication.

Customizable Chat Bubbles and Wallpapers
These new themes are more than just simple background changes. They are designed as “visual packages” that update both the chat wallpaper and the color of the message bubbles.
Instead of being restricted to the standard green, users will be able to choose from a variety of colors, such as “Sky Blue,” “Default Blue,” and “Royal Blue.” The report notes that these presets include different “intensity” levels, offering vibrant colors as well as softer, muted tones designed to reduce eye strain during long hours of use.
Better Organization for Different Chats
One of the most practical parts of this update is the ability to set unique themes for individual chats. This is particularly useful for users who manage many different conversations at once.
By assigning specific colors to different people or groups—such as blue for work and orange for family—users can quickly identify which chat they are in. This visual distinction helps prevent the common mistake of sending a message to the wrong window.
Privacy and Local Settings
As with many WhatsApp interface features, these customizations are strictly local. According to the findings, if you change a chat theme, only you will see the new colors. Your contacts will continue to see the chat in whatever theme they have personally selected on their own devices.
Availability
The feature is currently in the development stage as of mid-April 2026. It is expected to be released to beta testers first before rolling out to the general public. Once it becomes available, users can find these new options by going to Settings > Chats > Theme within the WhatsApp Web interface.
